Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Why October Matters

Oct 07,2026

October is recognised around the world as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Pink October. It is an important opportunity to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage people to pay attention to their breast health and remind communities about the importance of timely medical care.

For 2026, the World Health Organization’s theme is “Every story is unique, every journey matters.” The message recognises that every person affected by breast cancer has a different experience, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and emotional wellbeing.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women globally. In 2024, an estimated 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is therefore about much more than wearing pink. It is about education, early action, support and making sure people understand that they do not have to face a breast cancer journey alone.

Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters

Breast cancer can affect women of different ages and backgrounds.

While certain factors can increase the risk of developing breast cancer, many women diagnosed with the disease do not have a specific known risk factor apart from being female and getting older.

This is one of the reasons awareness is so important.

Understanding what is normal for your body can help you notice changes that should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Awareness is not about living in fear of cancer. It is about being informed and taking your health seriously.

Know the Signs of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer does not always present in exactly the same way.

Possible signs and changes can include:

  • A new lump or thickening in the breast
  • A lump or swelling under the arm
  • A change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Changes to the skin of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Changes to the nipple
  • A nipple becoming newly inverted
  • Unusual nipple discharge
  • Abnormal or bloody fluid from the nipple

These signs do not automatically mean that a person has breast cancer. Many breast changes can have other causes.

However, an unusual or persistent change should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Knowing Your Own Body

Breast awareness means becoming familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel.

Breasts can naturally change over time. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ageing and other factors can affect their appearance and feel.

Knowing what is normal for you can make it easier to recognise something different.

If you notice a new or unusual change, do not ignore it simply because you are unsure whether it is important.

A healthcare professional can assess the change and advise whether further investigation is necessary.

The Importance of Early Action

One of the major goals of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to encourage people to seek care promptly when they notice concerning changes.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment can play an important role in breast cancer outcomes. WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative focuses on improving early detection, timely diagnosis and access to quality treatment.

Depending on your age, health history and personal risk factors, a healthcare professional may recommend appropriate breast screening.

Screening recommendations can differ between individuals and healthcare systems, so it is important to discuss your personal situation with a qualified healthcare professional.

Breast Cancer Affects More Than the Body

A breast cancer diagnosis can affect a person’s emotional wellbeing as well as their physical health.

Someone receiving a diagnosis may experience fear, anxiety, sadness, anger or uncertainty about the future.

Treatment can also bring emotional challenges. Changes to the body, concerns about relationships, worries about finances and uncertainty about recovery can all contribute to stress.

This is why emotional support is an important part of caring for the whole person.

Supporting Someone With Breast Cancer

If someone you care about is diagnosed with breast cancer, you may not know what to say.

You do not need to have all the answers.

Sometimes simply being present can make a significant difference.

Listen without judging. Ask what they need. Offer practical assistance where possible and respect their decisions about their medical care.

A person may need help with transport, meals, household responsibilities or simply someone to talk to.

Most importantly, remind them that they are not alone.

Mental Health Support Matters

The emotional impact of a serious health diagnosis should not be overlooked.

If someone is experiencing ongoing anxiety, depression, overwhelming stress or difficulty coping, professional mental health support may be beneficial.

At AC Wellness, mental health and emotional wellbeing are central to the support provided to individuals facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress and emotional distress.

While breast cancer itself requires appropriate medical care from qualified cancer specialists, emotional support can help people and families cope with the psychological impact of a difficult health experience.

Make October a Reminder

Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to start conversations that can continue throughout the year.

Know your body.

Understand your risk.

Pay attention to changes.

Seek medical advice when something concerns you.

Support someone who is going through treatment or recovery.

And remember that awareness should lead to action.

The WHO’s 2026 message reminds us that every story is unique and every journey matters.
