Substance Abuse Among Teenagers: How to Spot the Warning Signs

Substance abuse among teenagers is a growing concern for many parents, teachers, and caregivers. Teens often experiment with drugs or alcohol due to peer pressure, curiosity, stress, or problems at home or school. Knowing the warning signs early can help adults step in and offer support before things get worse.

Some of the most common signs of substance abuse in teens include sudden changes in behavior. A once-happy teen may become withdrawn, moody, or angry. Their school performance may drop, and they might lose interest in hobbies they once loved. Changes in sleep patterns, eating habits, and personal hygiene are also red flags.

You might also notice your teen hanging out with a new group of friends or being secretive about where they’re going and what they’re doing. They may also ask for money more often or even steal. Physical signs like red or glassy eyes, frequent nosebleeds, or a constant cough could also be linked to substance use.

It’s important not to jump to conclusions, but don’t ignore the signs either. Open, honest conversations are key. Let your teen know you care and are there to help, not judge.  Early intervention can make a big difference in helping your teen choose a healthier path.
